Chapter 14

The cold-iron ore was an ugly, jagged lump of freezing density. It sat on the abrasive basalt floor of the alcove, mocking the fragile, bleeding human hands hovering over it. In his previous life, Vance would have requisitioned a plasma cutter, an industrial hydraulic press, and a team of union metallurgists to shape an alloy this dense. Here, three miles beneath a floating continent, he had a blunt iron stick and a magical nervous system that felt like it had been rewired with barbed wire.

He dropped to his knees, ignoring the sharp bite of the loose shale tearing through his frozen canvas pants. He pressed his right hand flat against the basalt floor adjacent to the raw ore.

He didn't need to ask the Lattice for permission. The heavy, rhythmic pulse of the [Basic Masonry] skill thumped steadily in his forearms, a localized heartbeat of dense earth-mana. He pushed the energy downward, visualizing the microscopic structure of the stone. A faint, deep-teal glow illuminated his calloused fingertips.

The freezing, solid basalt beneath his palm instantly surrendered its rigidity. It softened into a thick, heavy, clay-like consistency. Vance dug his fingers into the yielded stone, scooping out a deep, perfectly curved semi-circular trench. He repeated the process, creating a second, identical mold in the floor.

He released the mana. The stone instantly re-hardened, locking the molds into permanent, solid rock.

Now came the brutality. The magic allowed him to manipulate the earth, but the blue-silver cold-iron ore was a foreign, dense metal. He couldn't just mold it with his fingers; he had to physically force it to conform.

Vance grabbed the heavy block of unrefined ore and shoved it over the first trench. He picked up his blued-steel wrench-mace, choking up high on the thick iron handle. He raised the heavy weapon above his head, his bruised left shoulder screaming a violent, tearing warning.

He brought the iron down with the force of a desperate man.

CLANG.

The cavern echoed with the deafening, metallic shriek. Sparks flew into the pitch-black air, briefly illuminating Vance’s sweat-soaked, ash-stained face. The cold-iron ore dented, but it did not break.

Vance gritted his teeth, tasting copper. He swung again. And again. He was not a blacksmith gently coaxing metal into a refined shape; he was a demolition engineer violently beating an object into submission. Every kinetic strike sent agonizing shockwaves straight down the shaft of the mace and into his already traumatized elbows. His muscles burned with a fierce, localized fire that directly contrasted with the freezing air of the cavern.

He used short, rapid bursts of [Basic Masonry] to temporarily soften the dense, rock-like impurities locked within the raw ore, while simultaneously raining heavy, concussive blows down upon the metal to flatten it into the basalt mold. The physical exertion was catastrophic. His lungs heaved, desperately sucking in the thin, mildew-heavy air. Sweat poured from his forehead, stinging his eyes and freezing the moment it touched his jawline.

After twenty minutes of uninterrupted, agonizing kinetic violence, the first half of the ore was brutally compacted into the semi-circular trench.
